My wife and I were watching the original version of “Shall We Dance” and remarking on how the Hollywood version with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez (aside from an amazing rumba scene) made us throw up in our mouths a little bit.
As an avid consumer of foreign films, I wonder if you have any thoughts on the best (and worst) in films that were translated from one language/culture/time to another. What worked great, what was lost in translation, and why.
Thanks for your time and keep up with the amazing content, I love it!
Hmm, I haven’t seen a lot of the remakes, but generally, yeah, they do seem to be of lesser quality. I guess Chris Rock remade the film I recently reviewed, Chloe in the Afternoon, as I Think I Love My Wife…and though it got terrible reviews…I kind of have a morbid curiosity to check it out.
And there are some stories like Robin Hood that seem to get remade over and over again with varying degrees of quality. I like the Errol Flynn version, but I’m sure the new Ridley Scott one will be “ok” at least
But again, I’m no expert on new version of these movies, though a lot of the ones in the last decade or so that remake recent foreign films seem to be “American’s don’t want to read subtitles” projects. I guess they are doing an English language “Let the Right One In”…it might be fine, but what’s the point?

So guess what’s in this month’s issue of Guitar World? An interview with Varg Vikernes, who is out of prison and recording a new album…
Actually I have a review of his new album coming up later this week…it’s surprisingly good!
